What is BDI exactly?
In a nutshell, this index measures the amount end users are willing to pay for shipping raw materials, i.e., commodities. Although this index can be quite volatile, the speculator plays no role in it whatsoever. So what you have is a pure leading indicator of economic activity. Obviously, as demand for raw materials rises, shipping rates also rise. When demand declines, shipping rates conversely fall. The high this year was 4791, it is now 2769.

As I do not monitor on an ongoing basis so cannot tell if the latest number is UP or DOWN from yesterday.
BDI concept was known to me for about 2 years.....

Thanks to all of you for your on going discussion of BDI rates. The BDI is under attack by China as they feel that they have over paid for commodities for coal, copper etc. for several years. China wants price reductions for future shipments. Big pressure on shipping rates, to fall lower, just my .02 cents.
I also follow the con-tango situation with oil shippers.
The con-tango situation and number of ships that are storing oil and oil demand is an indicator of the direction on the price of oil. FRO has a few tankers storing oil, IMHO they do it to make money on oil price changes and it lowers the cost of owning the ships. FRO is a great oil shipping company that I have owned for a few years. They go up and down in price a lot.
