IS sell in May working so far ?
Everybody is looking for key investment format in Wall Street, one of the most talked about & bears favorite is "sell in May & go away".....
Like any popular theory which gives many gurus time to show their understanding of market generally fails them ....
Wall Street is never predictable even on a day to day basis sometimes even on a hour to hour basis.
Here is how indices closed on April 30th & how it is on Friday @ close :
S&P 500 April 30th close 1883.95, May 23rd close 1900.53 positive by 16.58 points
Dow April 30th close 16580.84, May 23rd close 16606.57 positive by 25.73 points
Nasdaq April 30th close 4114.56, May 23rd close 4185.81 positive by 71.25 points
So far "sell in May & go away" is not holding very well.....
Next popular theory is that VIX which closed @ new 52 wk low is signalling a " major collapse of this market"......we all know from experience new low begets lower lows......i will not be surprised IF we see 9 in VIX......which we have seen before.....
The way i see it, this TAPE has just gathered new "renewed strength"......this may entails new highs in Dow & higher highs in S&P 500 while Nasdaq is all set to make a new 52 wk high or 14 year high.....
We may see " momentum buying" going into month end........
Again, being diversified has proven to be a smart strategy which prevents or minimize losses during turmoil.
In any strength which is currently underway, diversified portfolio should outperform or do as well.
SO...sit back & enjoy this momentum buying & watch shorts & so-called smart bears scramble to get back in either to cover or go long.......this rally has further to go.......

About market, TAPE confirmed this rally by closing higher two days in a row. Nasdaq closed above 50 DMA in almost 2 months. Volume was higher today. I am expecting higher close again & should see new all time highs in S&P 500 ahead of memorial day long weekend. Staying diversified has helped my portfolio to balance any negative TAPE due to earnings reaction which @ best has been unpredictable. About market, TAPE was very strong & closed @ high of the day. Chinese Flash PMI for May came in @ 49.7% vs 48.1% for April, this is the best activity level in 5 months. I am expecting a strong day for Thursday, we may see new all time high in S&P 500 & may be Dow also.

This market is stuck around 50 DMA ?
TAPE has been painful for both bulls & bears.
None of the indices are making any progress, new all time highs were made & then 50 DMA was tested...not a healthy trend...
Since 2014, this market has shown sign of "bearish moves in many sectors"
High beta has been crushed to the tune of 40%
Small caps are beaten down by 10%
Metals & mining is near 3 year lows
We are swinging between correction or bear market moves in many key stocks like GOOG, PCLN, FB,TSLA, AMZN, YHOO, TRIP,LNKD, TWTR, MA....to name a few...
Why am i highlighting these negatives ?
Because TAPE is telling all of us to be extremely careful with our strategy & expectations.
Don't fight the TAPE is an old "technical conclusion"
Many are ignoring glaring sign of trouble in techland & small caps ?
There are times in market where "stocks go nowhere but stay down for months"
2014 is giving all signal that this trend remains intact till October....
New all time highs have no meaning for majority of traders who are stuck in high beta tech or small caps.
VIX currently @ 12.44 very close to 52 wk low which is @ 11.69...52 wk high is 21.91....hint hint.....
What i am doing is staying with boring stocks which are near 52 wk lows......where downside maybe limited & waiting for TAPE to show some strength.
I do not see any catalyst till October which will be a "show me time for many stocks"
SO...know your stocks well & understand what has gone out of favor.....
This IS a normal market where "all boats will not be lifted"
Only select few will move UP.....

WMT, Russell, 10 year yield, weak economic data & last but not the least David Tepper comment, but unemployment claims were lowest in many years. I believe David was more of a noise than anything else, these Billionaire Hedge funds are not known for market timing & are not followed broadly, in Q1 he was buying PCLN, GOOG..we all know how they are faring. David is 60% exposed to equities as of last night & advising "not being overweight equities". His equity exposure end of Q1 was over $9 Billion. I believe that we saw capitulation & may have formed a strong support today due to high volume buying near low of the day.

About market, TAPE continuing its march towards new all time highs in S&P 500 & Dow. Nasdaq continues its selling of high beta stocks again which is a disappointment. Internals were negative also. This is becoming a two sided market & one has to watch where money is put to work. Nasdaq may climb high beta wall of worries & keep moving higher slowly.

High beta downtrend over ?
High beta has been trashed for months now & many have fallen not below 50 DMA but below 200 DMA. Most of these darlings of last 5 years are making new 52 wk lows.
On Wall Street it is important to note any shift in "popularity"
Those who do not acknowledge these changes suffer badly.
BUT all bad things also comes to an end ......
High beta carnage may have seen its low point already.
It is important to know the difference between those who are ready to bounce vs those who needs many more weeks to muster any serious moves.....it is all in the charts..go with relative strength...anything @ or above 50 DMA are among the strongest...
Many are looking @ Head & Shoulder formation in Nasdaq & waiting for it to break the neckline......that is exactly the point to be "extremely bullish not bearish" as most of the "negativity" is reflected in reaching the neckline...smart ones shorted near "right shoulder" & have been covering near neckline........
Money is generally made in "safer trading range" which is from oversold level to overbought level".....we definitely have the feel of oversold market especially in high beta.
This week may be the week that Nasdaq & Russell comes back to life.....
This week we have a very good chance of a "major breakout" in S&P 500 & Dow.....they may make a decisive break to series of new all time highs.....
This week is also Option expiry week for week & monthly options...we are all set up for "firework" until Thursday........
